One of the most common arthritic changes that we see in the knee is change to the cartilage that sits between the bone’s surfaces. Cartilage is shiny and smooth. It functions to keep the bony surfaces apart as well as provide nutrition to the joint surfaces. Some types of joint changes are the cartilage can thin, get damaged or start to wear away from the joint surface. Over time, the joint surfaces will move closer together.

Another type of arthritic change is the formation of osteophytes, or bone spurs. These are outcroppings of extra bone that form in and around the joint surfaces. These two types of changes are very commonly seen in the knee joint.
